from Allligator Tears - That Fresh-Faced Kid Who Saw the Sky

Cheap motel window, winter’s day, the sun’s too bright
My daughter’s off awhile, draw the curtains, shade that light
No, that won’t do, see, that’s not really what I want
That’d be my age-old curse, the shut-up and the taunt

See the sky’s wide open now, just a cartooned cloud or two
That one could be a unicorn, there’s the old woman in her shoe
A sliver moon is just as faint as faint can be
Plenty close though, kids might even touch it from a tall tree

So now I’m thinking about a day we were spread out on the lawn
A ten-year-old with a pal or three and nothing wrong
You’ve never seen so many shapes as saw that day
Full pirate battles, heavy seas, even windswept sprays

And it was real, so real to us back then
Look, there’s a train, an old man’s face, his silly grin
And we all saw it, and we were laughing along with him
But somehow I got turned away, and I never looked again

What ever happened to that fresh-faced kid who saw the sky
The kid who loved to sing and dance, sure knew how to cry
What happened to that boy whose eyes were filled with light
Must have lost my sense of feel, my touch, my inner sight

Cause it was real, so real to us back then
Look, there’s a train, an old man’s face, his silly grin
And we all saw it, and we were laughing along with him
But somehow I got turned away, and I never looked again

The clouds are drifting now, the late-day wind is up
My daughter’d love it, hey there’s a saucer and a teacup
Forget my daughter, there’s a tiger and there’s his paw
And that cat’s on the prowl, obeying his own laws

And it’s real, just like it was back then
Look, there’s a train, an old man’s face, his silly grin
And I can sure enough see it, and I’m laughing along with him
If I ever get turned away, please spin me around again
………………………………………………………..
Please don’t let me get turned away again, from him
