Katy Rose Has a Dream

Katy Rose couldn't wait to get downstairs to tell her Mummy about her dream. Usually she had a hard time waking up, but not this morning, and it was even a Saturday. She put on her furry slippers that looked like bunny rabbits, and her favorite bathrobe that had the pictures of fluffy puppies, and scooping up her kitten off the bed, ran downstairs to find Mummy. "No running please" said Mummy.

Katy Rose, still holding Copy Cat, tried her best to slow down but it was hard because she had so much to tell.

"Katy Rose, you're up so early, and so full of energy. Poor Copy looks like he's rather still be sleeping." Copy looked up at Katy Rose and yawned, then closed his eyes and went back to sleep. Katy put Copy in his basket and said "Mummy, I've had a most wonderful dream and I want to make it come true. Can you help me, please?"

Mummy thought for a moment and said " Sometimes dreams come true by themselves, and sometimes they can't come true no matter what you do. I guess the first thing to do is to tell me your dream. I think this calls for some hot cocoa, don't you?" Katy Rose and her Mummy just love hot cocoa, even in summer time. If something makes them happy, they celebrate with hot cocoa. If something makes them sad, they have some hot cocoa so they'll feel better. When Katy Rose is missing her Daddy, who lives far away now, they both drink hot cocoa while they talk on the telephone.

Katy Rose went to sit in her favorite place in the window seat and nibbled on some toast while Mummy heated the cocoa. Copy had woken up and come to snuggle on her lap, purring his world championship purr. Mummy came with the hot cocoa and sat there too. "Now, tell me your dream." Katy Rose liked holding the warm cup and she felt a little like purring herself, but then she remembered the dream, sat straight up and began to talk very quickly. "Remember when we went to the pound to get a kitten, and I picked out Copy because his eyes looked so sad, and when I picked him up he started to look happy, and by the time we got him home, his eyes were smiling?" Copy's ears picked up a little when he heard his name, and he looked up at Katy Rose and Mummy, but right now his eyes just looked sleepy. Mummy said, "Of course I remember, were you dreaming about Copy?" "No Mummy", said Katy Rose, "I was dreaming about Mrs. Bonino."

Mrs. Bonino lived on the other side of the garden, and had the prettiest flowers Katy Rose had ever seen. Sometimes Mr. Bonino used to say that Mummy probably looked out at the beautiful roses and said " When I have a little girl, I'll call her Katy Rose." Then everyone would laugh, especially Mr. Bonino. But Mr. Bonino had gotten very sick and he died a few months ago.

Katy drank some hot cocoa and stroked Copy. "I was dreaming I was in the rose garden with Mrs. Bonino and she was looking very sad. Then a little white kitten with sad eyes came into the garden. I put the kitten in Mrs. Bonino's lap and they both started to have happy eyes. So Mummy, can we make the dream come true by taking Mrs. Bonino to the pound today to get a kitten?" Katy Rose had said this all so fast that she was out of breath but she noticed that her cup was still nice and warm. Mummy put down her cup and tugged on her ear. Katy Rose knew this meant she was thinking. "Well", said Mummy, "does the dream come true by getting a Mrs. Bonino a kitten, or does it come true by seeing Mrs. Bonino with happy eyes?" Now it was Katy's turn to think. In Katy Rose's dream it had been so simple, the kitten would make her happy, but she could tell by Mummy's ear tug, and her question, that she needed to think some more. Just then Copy got up from Katy's lap and went up the stairs. Mummy moved over and gave Katy Rose a hug. "I'm very proud of you for wanting to help Mrs. Bonino. Do you remember how sad you were when Daddy moved away?" Katy Rose didn't see what this had to do with a kitten, and besides she didn't like to think about it because it always made her cry. She shook her head yes, because she was afraid she would cry if she tried to talk. She though she needed another cup of hot cocoa but was still afraid to talk. Mummy held her a little bit closer and said "Mrs. Bonino is feeling as sad as that right now and she will always miss him like you miss Daddy. You have a kitten but still miss Daddy don't you?" Katy Rose shook her head yes. "So just getting a kitten won't make your dream come true will it?" Katy Rose shook her head no. Katy Rose was wondering how a morning that started out to be exciting had gotten so sad. Just as she was about to ask Mummy that question, she thought, I guess a person can feel happy and sad, excited, safe and scared all in the same day. She pulled on her ear and another thought came and she said " Mummy, maybe I could visit Mrs. Bonino and tell her about my dream and tell her about hot cocoa." Mummy gave Katy Rose another hug, and said "Good idea, but you can't go in your bunny rabbit slippers or your fluffy puppy bathrobe. You go get dressed, no running please, and I'll find a box of cocoa to take with us."

Copy Cat came down the stairs and with smiling eyes went to curl up in his favorite spot on the window seat.
