from Lifelines - A Twister's a-Coming

The shelf to my left now, maybe two feet away
Is holding the things that I’ve been waiting for all day
A green and blue notebook, a red and black pen
The notes I scribble down from my imaginary friend
Cause he says, just sit right down and let me do what I do
I’ll tell you things that you don’t even know you knew

See there’s nothing to worry, to vex or to fret
The demon’s staple tools to keep you neutral, hedge your bet
He likes you in neutral, on idle, on hold
It’s safe and dry and well-protected, so you’re told
But if we’re talking about living, well there ain’t much happening there
Yet there’s this big old world at your doorstep, if you dare

So take a step out now, a big gulp of air
Cause it’s all virgin turf to you, and it’s okay to stare
So, ya, take it all in now, we’ll stand here awhile
I’ll bet the ranch right now you can’t resist the urge to smile
A great big wide-eyed Christmas grin, a kid with so much to choose
So what would you try to do if you knew you couldn’t lose

A twister’s a coming, see it right over there
It’s upending high-rise towers, people scattered everywhere
But us, we’re not moving, not budging an inch
Cause I got you right by the shoulder, and you needn’t even flinch
Cause that big old whirling dervish, well that’s the father of them all
And when he comes to town, it’s cause you’ve finally heard the call

So walk toward that twister, I’m right by your side
And hang onto your hat, my son, cause this is going to be some ride
