from Lifelines - Used but Good to Go

Found this backward sunburst guitar, must be twenty years ago
Dusty in a storefront window, man said, Used but good to go
Told him right then that I’d take it, not sure why I took that leap
See that was bold and out of character, and lefty Guilds ain’t cheap

But as I stood there by that old man
His eyes whispering, It’s you
Made no sense at all but…I just knew that I just knew

Well that old whisper, heard it often, and sure do wish that I could say
That I’ve spent my life in service to it, each and every day
But no, you know I’ve done my penance, to that other voice instead
The one that whines and scolds, and sees a bitter world chock-full of dread

But as I stood there by that old man
His eyes whispering, It’s you
Made no sense at all but…I just knew that I just knew

So many moments like that moment, dozens of them every day
Times when I can turn toward the somber me, or choose to play
And mostly these days, well, I’m choosing, bearing north instead of south
Thinking mostly with my heart, so let these feelings flood on out

But as I stood there by that old man
His eyes whispering, It’s you
Starts to make some sense cause…I just knew that I just knew

So when the Reaper come to get me, long dark cloak and all that stuff
When he hooks me by the shoulder, and says, Man, you’ve had enough
I’ll say, Grim man, no you’re wrong there, see I can’t ever get enough
Of all this heaven that’s on earth here, so you can stuff your huff and puff

Cause as I stand here by this old man
His eyes whispering, It’s you
Makes perfect sense ….cause I just knew that I just knew

I just knew that I just knowed
Cause I can feel it in this toe
And when it’s time, I’ll be good to go…
